Wings V2 WIP by Mashayahana Wings V2 WIP by Mashayahana
*NOTE* No, I do not have a tutorial or blueprints, I did not make the frame, I got it as part of a trade. As for the feathers, no tutorial there either, but have a look at ~Sunnybrook1 for a feather making tutorial.

Second version of my wings. I've been working on this project forever, it's almost like there's a curse on it or something.
I finished this layer of feathers this morning, I haven't positioned them yet, nothing is really attached, but this is just to show how massive they are.
Starting on the second layer of feathers today, which will be dark red. I hope they turn out ok, not worked with colored fabric before on feathers.

I am very happy with the shape, it's almost like a weird mix of a bird and a butterfly.

And yes, they are articulated, they can be folded onto my back.

Greetings, I live in Georgia usa, I am trying to build the servo unite for the wing mechanics.
Can you tell me what to use and where best to locate the items needed? I know nothing of this type of animitronic fabrication. Your wings do what I want to make mine do as far as movement. But I don't know how to identify the correct gears and servos I will need to make this.
If you prefer my email I can provide it.
Thank you Mimi

Hey, I haven't used any gears or motors on my wings so I couldn't tell you honestly. If you want some schematics for motorized wings you should have a look at Bushitaka here on DA, he has far, far more knowledge about those kinds of things :)

thank you, I have limited access to the internet right now and the app is not working very well on my phone.
I just found him here and it looks like his reference will be a big help.

fake silk (polyester or nylon) lining with a layer of a sort of webbing in between and lots of glue :)

Webbing?

Yeah, a sort of polyester fibre mat, sort of looks like a messy spider web. Sorry if it's not really clear, English is not my first language :)

like buckram?
sorry for asking alot of questions. also is the webbing visible? like where did you put it on exactly?

Not like buckram at all, its a polyester version of fiberglass mat and I think it's normally used for uneven walls, before doing wallpaper. Looks almost exactly like this: i00.i.aliimg.com/img/pb/369/98…

It's not visible, it's more of a sandwich of lining-mat-lining held together by the glue.

then you cover that with another layers of the fake silk?

No, its just the fake silk lining, then the mat, then another layer of the fake silk lining. So lining-mat-lining like I said before :)

I would love to burn mine in a ritualistic bonfire thing for all the grief they've caused me. But by all means go ahead and make yourself wings, maybe you can learn from my mistakes and get it right the first time :)

Would you mind if I based my wings off of these? I know you did not create them nor have the blueprints, but I really love the shape, and wanted to ask you if you would mind if I tried to create similar ones.

I did make the wings, just not the frame that the feathers are attached to. The shape is just random, I tried to make it look like I wanted it to, so sure go ahead. More wings are a good thing!

How do you fold them to your back?

:iconmashayahana:

There's a thingy at the top of each wing joint that I can grab and push to open them, pull back in to close them. They're held open by gas springs (or whatever it's called in english)

These wings remind me a lot of the wings worn in the dream sequences of the movie "Brazil." Was that a possible inspiration for this creation? :)

These are a totally original idea, inspired by birds and angel-pictures from all over the web, hehe.

Ah well there's a re-occurring dream sequence in the movie where the main character dreams of flying among other crazy dream stuff and these wings look almost identical. It's my favorite movie and a great cult classic. It's a pretty insane movie with a lot of symbolism but if anything, I imagine you'd enjoy seeing wings just like yours in action! Here's a little trailer for the movie: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvBF3L…

I hope you like it, it's pretty weird though! It's got a very dark sense of humor and is set in a dystopian future were the world runs on bureaucracy and paperwork. If you watch it, I hope you see the original ending and not the shitty Hollywood ending. It's got a pretty mind-blowing twist in the original ending. ^_^

These are really great! I've been playing with the idea of stiffening fabric to make extra large feathers, as the results are pretty impressive! I would need to figure out the base though, as I could see some problems with making wings this size and not  having the option to fold them somehow lol

I even have problems with them when folded, as I don't fit through doors anymore. The solution to that is in the frame though, as they can both fold straight back as well.
One wing is about 2 meters wide, so imagine if they were opened and trying to walk anywhere ;)

Luckily the con I am making these for is outdoors. That helps a lot.

Having them fold back is a good feature. I can imagine the challenge when trying to get them in the car x]

Fold them and put some plastic over them xD
They can fold in and I can pull the wings together to the back, they don't take up as much space like that.

*smacks forehead* derp. Of course. I was imagining trying to fit those in a closet fully expanded, which didn't quite work. I settled with you leaving them in the living room when you weren't working on them cuz damn, that is one conversation starter.

SO VERY COOL. :D

I'm actually tempted to leave them open (when they're done) and hang them on the wall there, along with all my other cosplay weapons and some armor parts I have there now. It sure makes people go "err, wtf is this O.o"

....I like your thinking. XD Okay, here's what you do: you hang up all your badass weapons and get yourself one of these to put in the middle of them all lordnightbane.deviantart.com/a…

If that doesn't shock people, then I don't know what will XD

That is exactly how that would work. xD
